I began formal studies in fine arts at Concordia U. in Montreal, P.Q. where hard-edge painting and optical art were all the rage. It was a wonderful foundation for learning about the qualities of colour. I abruptly had to move to Alberta and continued my studies at the U. of Alberta working by day in the undergraduate degree program and by night at the Extension Dept. for other studies in portraiture and figurative watercolours.
Upon graduation I moved to the United Kingdom and ended up teaching fine arts at a middle school in Gateshead just outside of Newcastle. This enabled me to travel to Paris to explore there the great museums and galleries, a sojourn to Dublin to see the National Gallery of Ireland, as well as to make several visits to London to view the major museums and galleries.
I returned to Canada and spent the next 10 years or so teaching fine arts in Quebec and Ontario secondary schools. During those years I exhibited regularly in provincial, community and private galleries until in 1985 I moved to Vancouver to pursue graduate studies at the University of British Columbia. After 18 more years or so of teaching fine arts in the elementary school system, I retired from teaching in 2008. I now work full time on painting from my studio in Port Moody, B.C.
